A different kind of Macro?

Today's video is covering a new kind of photography, for me anyway. Long-lens macro. Up until this point I have very much been focused on using 100mm and shorter focal lengths to capture close up macro; but I am experimenting with a dedicated 180mm macro lens, made by Canon.

      Hi Kat, the autofocus works really well. No problems with it at all. I have used it on my 5D mark 3 as well as adapt it onto my Canon R8 and it performed on both of them really well. I created a focus stack using the Canon R8 with in camera stacking and the lens managed to keep up with the cameras 30 frames per second shooting and focusing speed! Check out MPB for a second hand version, they might have one in now. Make sure you get one with the tripod collar as you really need to keep the camera as still as possible.

      Hi. It was a long time ago that I made this video but I recall that I was using my 100-400 lens on it, which is circa 1-5kg. If the 200-600 is similar ball park then it will work fine. It’s important to note that I wouldn’t leave it unattended on the three small feet with such a heavy setup. It could support that weight fine when vertical, but if positioned at a slight angle it would topple over. It is a monopod after all.

    • @benharveyphotography

      I managed to find a second hand one from MPB and surprisingly they make different model numbers for different lenses and it is really difficult to find online which ones are compatible. I am looking at the new R5MKII but cant imagine my 70-200 F2.8 with a 2x extender on the adaptor with the R5 body!! Dilema?? Having said that I wouldnt want to replace it with the RF version either at nearly £3k

    • @benharveyphotography
      @benharveyphotography 8 дней назад

      Without knowing which DSLR body you are going from and what you shoot, it is difficult to comment on whether you are going to achieve the results and performance on a brand new mirrorless camera with adapted lenses. Ok the basis that you are extending I am going to assume you are shooting wildlife or something that needs more reach. Honestly if you are going mirrorless then get a native Canon lens like the 100-500 and buy the R5 mark 1 if you need to save some money. The upgrades on the r5 and minimal compared to the mark 1. If you need a long lens that doesn’t have a fast aperture they make a 600 and 800 f11.

    • @benharveyphotography
      @benharveyphotography 8 дней назад

      One extra comment. Having a relatively compact mirrorless camera with an adaptor, then an extender, then an EF lens is going to result in a very long, front heavy, unbalanced and odd looking setup that I personally wouldn’t enjoy using (I recently used a mirrorless camera with an adapter and extension tubes with the 100-400 L lens and although optically it was great it was not a pleasurable experience. So before you pounce on buying the R5ii have a think about what you intend on shooting with it and what the best tools for the job might be.

      I would say that the partial extension of the legs is less intuitive as it’s not as easy to grip a carbon fibre leg and twist - but it works. The officer part is actually getting all the legs to partially extend to the same length.

    I've looked at getting a second hand 180mm macro lens some time ago -- although it was probably one of Sigma's variants. However, it would have to be adapter on my Fuji camera and that would probably mean the AF would not be quite as good. For these kind of shots as you've been showing off in this video, I'm better off with my Fuji 70-300mm zoomlens! And perhaps a macro extension ring on it. It's light, small, stabilized, and it can give me wonderfully smooth backgrounds when I pay a bit of attention to the environment. And it gets reasonably close while having a good working distance.

    • @benharveyphotography

    Loved this video, Ben. Thank you. Im going backpacking at the end of the year with my Canon Eos R50. Do you think this lens would also be suitable for nighttime/evening photos, such as cities, sunsets, etc??

    • @benharveyphotography
      @benharveyphotography 10 дней назад

      Hello. I understand that the R50 is a cropped sensor camera which means that this will not longer be a proper wide angle lens, it will actually be 26mm. So as long as you take this into account you will be fine. F2.8 is reasonably fast, but it is not incredible in low-light and you might be better off getting a wider and faster lens from Sigma now that Canon have allowed them to make autofocus lenses for cropped sensor Canon mirrorless. It all depends on which focal length you wish to shoot your images at. I hope that this helps.

    BTW - Canon has fine line of videography cameras and some are compatible with EF lenses. So why bother with DSLR that is video camera shoved in the body of a DSLR. Canon has a fine line of camcorders and cinematography cameras cost less than a new R1. You already have your L lenses and you can buy a video camara for much less than an R1

  • @dps6198
    @dps6198 13 дней назад

    Considering the cost of the RF lenses and how much the EF lenses have dropped in price I would definitely buy the adapter and use the EF lenses, especially the L, until the prices drop. If they don't then the EF lenses will be in more demand than the RF and the cost of the EF lenses will go back up. I recently bought three L lenses, EF 50mm f/1.2 L, EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L II and the EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L II for so much less on the used market than what they cost new and definitely lower than the RF lenses. The key is to find out when the and of service life is for the lens you're interested in then buy. If the service life is less than one year then pass and spend a little more on the Mk II or III so that you have access to Canon PS. I had an idea that the RF L lenses would to too expensive for my budget but with the adapter my wife has an RP and I have the R along with the 1Ds MkII and 5D MkII DSLR so we're booked solid. Additionally, the newer cameras won't function with 3rd party batteries. You will have to buy Canon batteries or your camera will be dead in the water. Personally I'd live to have all genuine Canon batteries but that's not possible because the ones I need are always out of stock or on backorder. So I buy 3rd party and I haven't looked back. Did you know that one of Canon's latest flash won't use AA batteries? Flashes have used AA batteries for decades and now that's another Canon battery you'll need or your flash won't work so buy a refurbished or preowned flash that can use AA batteries because they are very easy to find and way less expensive that genuine Canon batteries at $80 to over $100 each.

      Just to put it out there, I am not advocating that anyone switch to mirrorless. Only if it makes sense for what you shoot I still use my Canon 5d mk3 with my EF glass because I prefer the way that those larger heavier lenses balance on a larger camera body. Another minor but relevant point is that I don’t switch off my DSLR. It just goes into standby and the batteries last a really long time. That way it is always ready to shoot. I switch off my mirrorless Canons to save the battery life all the time, even when I am just holding it. If however you shoot video, like I do, then mirrorless is an obvious choice due to reliable continuous autofocus to film yourself to make these videos.

    Damn so i probably can’t pair my canon r10 with the sigma 30mm 1.4 Art lens with this because of the unbalanced weight??? That really sucks cause I don’t wanna pay more for the canon RF 30mm. I got the Sigma at a big discount at a pawnshop

      Tell me the total weight of that setup and I will see if it can work. I have put a full frame camera with a 35mm f1.8 on this gimbal before and it worked fine.

    I’ve had this bag for a while now. Whilst it’s a solid camera bag; I have had a major irritation - the tripod cup is not very secure; it’s fallen off my bag on several occasions and the last time I lost it completely. It’s not possible to buy a single replacement; you need to buy it with a bunch of other stuff. So this tiny item is costing me £65! For all their claimed green credentials this is not sustainable. It’s ridiculous having to buy a whole bunch of unnecessary stuff just to get the single item I need. Very poor.

      Hi Glen, I can see how this could be annoying, my friend Jamie lost one of the straps on the back of his and would have to buy the kit to replace one (but at least that is an option). I have not had this issue with the drink holder or the tripod holder. I have mine looped through two of the black loops on the bag, mine is set at the bottom of the back in the middle (not the side) and I find the Velcro to be very strong. The tripod folder is only large enough to hold one of my tripod feet though, whereas some of my other bags hold two feet or all three; this is more of an observation rather than a problem as one tripod foot still stops it from sliding out. This tripod is strapped back to the bag using the two supplied buckle straps. I hope this makes sense.

    Watching this in 2024. I just bought an r100 and an adapter so I can use all of my EF lenses on it. I have noticed that I'm getting really good performance out of these old lenses. I've only bought one RF lens so far.

    • @benharveyphotography
      @benharveyphotography 13 дней назад

      It will depend on what DSLR you are coming from, but the newer mirrorless cameras have much better focusing capabilities and faster frame rates etc. If you want to compare EF and RF lenses though you need to compare like for like. Therefore your EF lenses adapted might out perform a new but clear RF lens. I have a Canon R8 and now I can use EF lenses to do in camera focus bracketing for macro, so there are benefits to having a newer body, with or without native lenses.

    I appreciate the information you provide, but I'm curious: why do so many of your macro photos of insects seem to be shot at an aperture of f/1.8 instead of f/8 or f/11, which would keep the entire insect in focus?

    • @benharveyphotography
      @benharveyphotography 18 дней назад

      Hi Dave, this is a goof question and one that I will tackle in more detail in a future macro video - but I am shooting at F2.8 on the 100mm macro lenses to create a non-distracting background. If I had a clean background, say a blue sky and I was shooting upwards, then I could shoot at F8, but at these levels of macro the insect would still not be entirely in focus. So assuming that you have to work with the situation and create as least-distracting background as possible then you use a wide aperture to do so. If you want the entire subject to be in focus then you have to focus stack (if your camera allows it and the subject stays still) then you should many images at different focus planes and blend them together in photoshop or Helicon focus. I am going to make a video about that in future - but there are quite a few online already. I hope this answers the question!

    Used to have the OS map app few years back and thought it was reasonable value for the annual subscription cost. Was wondering if a separate device like a Garmin would be a good option for you as you still have you phone as a back up and not having to worry about battery life too if you ever forget to charge your phone before hand

    Traditionally I'd use my sense of direction and adventure, though this would always mean I'd end up having to climb at least one or two fences when off the beaten track. A Garmin Femix watch will give you "hot spots" on the map, represented by a purple lines on my watch. It's where other Garmin users have been, so can be used to see where others go, or to navigate towards when properly lost in farmland, or woods etc. I find getting lost fun as it creates a challenge!

      Hi Rick, thanks for sharing how you navigate the land, and yes I agree getting lost does create a fun challenge and could make for more interesting videos perhaps?!? The issue I have is that I fit photography around my family and work life, so I generally have to be back to breakfast or in time to start work - unless I am lucky enough to have blocked out an entire morning to explore a location (which is rare for me). Other full time landscape photographers would be able to take this approach though and perhaps yield better results.

      @@benharveyphotography I fully understand you have to work around your commitments, which you do very well considering the quality of your videos. Maybe, rather than heading out in an area you may get lost in, how about asking for something to photograph which you then have to try and find an area where you may be able to complete the challenge? Just as an example, shoot a lone oak tree with a sunrise behind it etc? You'd have to then find the shot!

      Hi Ben, the South Downs National Park has public rights of way running through them, and you can wander off the path enough, providing that you don’t jump fences or scare off live stock. This is kind of my point with using this or another app, as they provide you with the reassurance that you are not tresspassing - all of their public routes are clearly indicated.

  • @BenjaminWhite66212
    @BenjaminWhite66212 24 дня назад

    I use Google maps for planning. Also I download maps in the Google app for offline use. For Hiking and off road I use Backcountry Navigator apps. I still use paper topographic maps and compass. Ordinance survey also sells paper maps. You should always have more than one method to navigate. A handheld Garmin would be good for better topo maps. My advice is to travel with someone else and tell someone where you are going.

    and I, I took the one less travelled by. The places you go to, I probably would not, knowing what's there. There are two places I like to go: Home, where I grew up starting in the 40s. Inland, where there's nothing to see. If I did happen to go to your locations, I like to think that you wouldn't recognise some of my scenes. If I go into the bush, I need to take a compass bearing for N/S and a GPS tag to know which way to go when I find the road. I think you would struggle here.
